About The Dominican Republic

A Little History

The beautiful country of the Dominican Republic sits on the island of Hispaniola, home to over 11 million people.  Hispaniola was originally named La Isla Espanola, by Christopher Columbus when he disembarked onto the island in the 1400s.

The indigenous people of the Dominican Republic were Taino Indians, hunters, gathers, and farmers, from the Yucatan Peninsula and South America. The rich ancestry of the Dominican people also includes Spanish and  African predecessors.

Dominicans are proud of their heritage and their history. Puerto Plata, Santiago, and the capital city of Santo Domingo are just some of the places that are home to statues, cathedrals, and monuments, to the countries engaging remote and recent history. The Cathedral of Santa Maria la Meador, the first Cathedral in the Americas, and the Plaza de la Pandora, celebrating the Dominican Flag, are both located in Santo Domingo, and are noteworthy places of interest to visit.
